Doodads: Final Fantasy III SNES Rom Hack
Or: What One Geeky Fan Did One Summer While He Was Bored.
The are the types of people that like SNES video games. There is a smaller subsection that likes SNES video games enough to have collected playable files to replay on system emulators.
There's an even smaller section of fans that have taken the actual code for a SNES game rom, and cracked it open to mess about with its innards.
I was one of those fans.
Many years ago , back when Cafe Eblana was still running, as a sort of
thank you gift to the community for sticking around so long (at the time, Cafe
Eblana was the world wide web's longest running SquareSoft message board that
had eventually become a bit of a free-chat system), I worked on a little
project: a hack of the SNES game Final Fantasy III, peppered with not only
re-written text, but some tweaked graphics, and totally renamed items, spells,
magic effects and enemies. I did squeeze myself in to the role formerly taken by
Locke, as the embittered Pokemon enslaver capturer. I sprinkled
in in-jokes, recast certain board members as main characters, re-did some spell
effects, and re-did dialogue.
And while the screen shots here highlight some of the sillier jokes, not all of it has been turned into a theater of the absurd. I worked rather hard with the text engine, even incorporated special characters and text pauses to try and match more natural speech.
Heck, I even redid the in-game fonts.
So come, journey into a land where Posters and Trolls vie for power...
